USAPL CORNER September 2005 INTRODUCTION First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I am Jennifer Thompson, State Chair of USA Powerlifting, North Carolina. As a competitor, I have won five Bench Press Nationals Championships, placed second three times at Powerlifting Nationals and participating in six World Bench Press Championships winning two of them. After becoming an accomplished lifter, I felt like I needed to give back to the sport that has given me so much. I started with becoming a referee, directing several meets and taking over the NC state chair position. Since I have become the state chair, I have watched our membership grow from 30 to 80 and our competitions in NC went from zero to four a year. One of the things that makes me proud to be a part of the USAPL is its’ dedication to drug free lifting and keeping lifters on an equal playing field. As our sport has grown nationally, so has the use of performance enhancing drugs, types of drugs available and equipment. I have found the USAPL to be the toughest organization in these areas. All USAPL meets, including local state meets, test 10% of the competitors with a urinalysis test. In its’ quest to help powerlifting become and Olympic sport, our organization follows the WADA (World Anti-Doping Association) and its affiliate USADA guidelines and rules. Any athlete can go to their website to look up banned substances at www.usantidoping.org. Thanks to North Star Pride for its’ interest in drug-free powerlifting and including the USAPL along with other reputable organizations. My next article will focus on powerlifting gear.
